These Paddle Testers have Tryptic Soy Agar with TTC on one side, and Violet Red Bile Agar on the other. Tryptic Soy Agar is used for the enumeration of total aerobic bacteria. Violet Bile Red Agar is a selective and differential medium used in microbiology to detect and enumerate total coliform bacteria, particularly in food and dairy products. It contains bile salts and crystal violet to inhibit gram-positive bacteria (such as Staphylococci) and allows lactose-fermenting gram-negative bacteria to grow. Lactose fermenters appear as pink to red colonies. Non-lactose fermenters produce colorless colonies.
Please note: Paddle testers are semi-quantitative, and are used to evaluate microbial contamination by measuring colony-forming units (CFUs) that form on the agar surface after dipping in liquid, or contacting surfaces.
They provide a simple, on-site means of estimating microbial load changes over time, verifying any control measures that are in place are sufficient, and allowing appropriate actions to be taken if needed.
Paddle testers are NOT a quantitative microbiological test method.
